Earlier this week, the Chancellor announced the Government's 2024 Spring Budget and it contained several policy announcements on tech, data and AI.
Amongst them were initiatives to leverage data and AI to improve public services, the announcements of a £7.4 million AI Upskilling Fund pilot for SMEs, and additional funding to support public compute.
As a member of the Smart Data Council, I was particularly encouraged to see a commitment to accelerate the benefits of smart data schemes through targeted funding for consultations and calls for evidence in the energy and transport sectors.
As the use of AI expands across the public sector, we (the Open Data Institute) urge the government to consider a more data-centric approach to AI, and to place even more emphasis on transparency, explainability, and accountability. In addition, we would urge it to ensure it hears views from all parts of society, all nations and regions and all demographic groups .
