I had the privilege of hosting AI and tech specialist, Adrian Joseph OBE on the Social Mobility Commission podcast to talk about data, AI and social mobility. Adrian has been a member of the AI Council helping to advise the UK Government on the national AI strategy and he was the chair of the Race Equality Board.
We discussed the risks and opportunities that AI and technological development present to education, to the workplace, and to the way we live. We discussed how AI could be used to tackle inequalities and support social mobility. Given my role at the Open Data Institute, I was also really interested in Adrian's thoughts on how addressing data biases, and incorporating data ethics and data standards are really important to the data and AI ecosystem so we can mitigate the risk of entrenching biases and negatively impacting marginalised communities.
Our SMC State of the Nation report showed that the most disadvantaged children start school 4.5months behind their more advantaged peers and leave school 18 months behind. Adrian shared his insights on how AI and data could support improvements in education, and in widening opportunities for less privileged young people.
Our discussion was wide ranging and Adrian’s insights were fascinating.
